Yield to maturity

The return a bill or bond produces if it is held to its maturity date and pays as scheduled.

For a discount instrument such as a treasury bill, the yield comes from the gap between the purchase price and the face value paid at maturity.

It is a calculation, not a guarantee: it assumes the issuer pays on the date agreed and that the holder does not sell earlier at a different price.
